Decoding the Mystique of Glacier Marriages: A Fusion of Folklore and Science

Join us on this journey

"How can the life giver itself be lifeless?" Glaciers, the providers of all life, in Balti folk are believed to be living beings, so much so that there are male and female glaciers. Through Gang Khswa, a Balti ceremony meaning “nourishes with deep love and affection, male and female glaciers are married, and a baby glacier is born. This is not a science fiction plot but an existing reality in Baltistan. Almost every valley in the region has one or more grafted glaciers that provide sustenance to the villages below. They call them "pet glaciers"; the term they use is "Paltu," which is much more affectionate and nurturing than its English counterpart.

Science is yet to explore this glacier making process; the rest of the world doesn't even know this technique exists. There is a huge gap that exists between indigenous knowledge and science. It is within this chasm that Gul-Re exists, serving as a bridge between science and tradition. For the first time ever, we bring you exclusive footage, community narratives, expert opinions, and conversations with the glacier-makers themselves. Stay connected as we reveal the secret art, craft, and science behind glacier-making.
