Decoding the Mystique of Glacier Marriages: A Fusion of Folklore and Science
Join us on this journey
The glacier marriages of Gilgit Baltistan are as enchanting as they are advanced. They hold the mystique of ancient epics, yet the magical realism of sci-fi. Glacier marriages, deeply entwined with the culture and folklore of Gilgit Baltistan, grew from the necessity to create artificial glaciers to create water resources, enabling cultivation, and supporting a growing population. Hence the ritual Gang Khswa, a technique through which male and female glaciers are brought together to grow a new glacier.
Despite being the source of prosperity and sustenance to thousands of households in the region, the glacier marriages of Gilgit Baltistan are less known to the outside world. For the first time, Gul-re attempts to understand the myth and symbolism of the glacier marriages and the science behind their success.
